What is IP?

IP (intellectual property) is an umbrella term that generally covers four legally protectable types (or “categories”) of assets: Patents, Trademarks, Copyrights, and Trade Secrets.

Each category of intellectual property imparts unique, legally enforceable rights to benefit from and control a specific type of creation once certain requirements are met. For example, patents protect inventions, trademarks protect brand identifiers, copyrights protect creative works, and trade secrets protect confidential information. Though each category of intellectual property protects different types of creations, there can be (and often is) overlapping protections of the same creation by different intellectual property classes. For example, a logo of a company can be legally protected by copyright protection and trademark protection.
